The 1-Step 3-stage GL® Bit is a 1-piece Bit and Boss drill guide that takes the guesswork out of lining up the different sizes of bits, so you get maximum weight-bearing capacity out of your Garnier limb®. The 1-Step system allows you to use one bit for the entire length of your Garnier Limb®, making it easier than ever to install your new Garnier Limb®. Used in soft and hardwood applications.
We charge $50 monthly rental fee and a $300 deposit. Send the bit back to us (include your order# and name of person who rented the bit) and we will refund your deposit of $250. If you keep the bit for two months we will refund you $200 and if you want to buy the bit the price is $300 and you just keep the bit. If your drilling into hard wood like oak we recommend you use a 1" bit first.

great bit
Don't even think about installing a GL without this bit. It made just the right hole for a perfect GL fit. It's a bit pricey, but with 30 days to rent, that makes it a reasonable option.

Cuts like new
This might have been a used bit but I couldn't tell the difference. It arrived quickly, clean and sharp. It cut thru my two 18"-24" Ponderosa pine trees like butter. I suppose if you were drilling into hardwoods like Oak or Maple, perhaps renting the 'new' bit might be advantageous. Like others have mentioned previously, measure, measure, then measure again...once you start drilling you're committed. I used a Bosch hammer drill that i borrowed from a friend. Also had to use an adapter to attach the 1/2" rental bit into the Bosch since it only accepts slotted style bits (SPX I think). Make sure your ladder is very stable and secure. Hang on for life. Hammer drills can be dangerous - especially if the bit catches on something while drilling. It can and will often over torque itself...breaking your wrist / forearm...be careful. I found that going slow and backing the bit out every inch or so helped - keeping the hole cleaned out constantly will greatly reduce the odds of it catching and jamming up. Overall I am very impressed. Drilled each hole in about 10 mins. Pure Awesomeness!

Its really a must
Make sure you start out level. I used a 1/2" DeWalt set at 300 rpms, it also engaged a clutch at that setting. You want that feature if you're high up a ladder. You have to clean the bit often at the start, once it starts to self feed the chips start flying! We put on our rock climbing harnesses and tied into the tree, safety first.

The only way to go!
I rented the 3 stage bit and it is definitely worth it! When everything is lined up perfectly, you get the incredible strength that GL is designed for. Don't question a slightly higher expense to do things right when you are putting so much $$$ and your children up in the trees! I think children was supposed to come first there ;)

Must Have Tool
This bit makes quick work of drilling holes for your TABs! Just make sure you have a 1/2" drill with lots of torque (and hold on!)

It was good to have this for a tool. The alternative would have been much more difficult. The holes were easy to drill straight but this particular bit was bent. The TABs fit well though.
